What I would like to see in gecko
« on: July 24, 2010, 07:59:48 PM »

Really wanted this to work for me.  But there are a few things that I feel are lacking not only in baby gekko but most cms platforms.  That is the ability to upload a header banner (and/or logo) and change the background color (or add a background pattern or graphic) to my website, from the admin panel.

Seems in every cms or blog platform you must go into the script or css to make changes to those things.  If it was a true DIY "easy" platform, then all those things should be accessible from the admin panel.  I should not have to go into the script for anything!!

I don't see anywhere in babygekko to change the header from your "baby gekko" to my own.  Where would I change this?   In your description of baby gekko you say "user friendly cms that even your mom can operate."  But only if mom works for an IT company.  No my mom wouldn't be able to go into my server and find the css file to change the code to accept an image that has to be uploaded to an image folder!

I suppose my frustration comes from being a merchant for several years on such platforms as bigcartel and etsy.  On those platforms (although ecommerce, which is also a good idea for babygekko, a small eshop module) you could easily upload a banner for your page.  Just click "browse" and I can roam my computer to upload any pic in my files.

Not sure why more cms's don't do this.
Just my .2 cents.

I'm still keeping baby gekko in my files, and hope to come back to it soon.  It's a neat little platform.  But those few changes would make it more perfect.

Hi patchouli,
Thank you for the comment.

First of all, the ability to upload a header banner (or logo) as you mentioned - should be in a module. This is why I separated it and make the apps + modules + textbots API so people can develop the extensions that allow to make any changes the user want.

As for the template, I still prefer to keep the user away from touching it. In the past, working with clients, only a few know how to change it by themselves without wrecking the entire design of the template.

The goal is not to make some sort of Google Pages or Frontpage - rather a fully working CMS that is easy to use, edit, and navigate and where the user can download 3rd party extensions (which I will make available soon)

Thanks again and I definitely accept all feedback to make this CMS better!
